Spain’s southernmost region, and more specifically the Costa del Sol, will become the epicentre of world golf when the 2023 Solheim Cup is held from 18 to 24 September at Finca Cortesín.
This September, Andalusia will be the true heart of world women’s golf for the 2023 Solheim Cup, an event that will pit the best European and American players against each other at Finca Cortesín, Casares.
A heart that will beat stronger than ever from the Costa del Sol, the Mediterranean coastline in the province of Malaga where golf is much more than a sport, as, with more than 70 courses, it is the area with the highest concentration of golf courses in Europe.
With this data, the fact that this region has been chosen as the venue for the Solheim Cup for the first time in Spain is no trivial matter, and it is clear that this event will become an excellent loudspeaker to publicise the innumerable attractions of the area, both to the millions of viewers who will watch the event on TV and to the thousands of lucky people who will attend the tournament live.
Those watching the competition from home will have more than enough arguments to choose Andalusia for their next holiday, and those of the more than 80,000 who have bought their tickets for the Solheim Cup 2023 will have an exceptional cultural, gastronomic and leisure offer at their fingertips.
To begin with, the Solheim Cup is not only the top international women’s golf competition and one of the most important events in women’s sport worldwide, it is an event that transcends the sporting aspect and, therefore, will feature a week of gastronomic dinners and a host of activities.
And if you are still hungry for more, the offer is almost unrivalled
For example, the strategic location of the Costa del Sol means that emblematic Andalusian cities such as Seville, Cadiz, Jerez de la Frontera and Granada are just a stone’s throw away, perfect for a getaway before, during or after the Solheim Cup.
Even closer are world-renowned golf courses such as the Real Club de Golf Sotogrande, home of the Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucía Masters 2023, the Real Club de Golf Las Brisas, host of the Andalucía Costa del Sol Open de España 2023 or, of course, the Real Club de Valderrama, scene of major tournaments such as the 1997 Ryder Cup which, without doubt, marked a before and after in Andalusia’s golf tourism.
As for Malaga, the capital of the Costa del Sol, it is the birthplace of Pablo Picasso and, as such, has some interesting proposals based on the figure of the brilliant painter, especially as this year marks the 50th anniversary of his death.
There is also the so-called “Costa del Sol Museum Route” with establishments such as the Carmen Thyssen Museum, the Russian Museum Collection in St. Petersburg or the Automobile Museum, and other more curious ones such as the Glass and Crystal Museum, the Museum of Miniatures, the Bonsay Museum and the Bandolero Museum.
Contemporary art and urban art also have their corners such as the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga, the Centro Pompidou Málaga, the CAC in Mijas and the CAC in Vélez-Málaga.
Nature and active tourism should not be overlooked either, with Natural Parks such as the Sierra de las Nieves, which is also a Biosphere Reserve, or the salt lagoon of Fuente de Piedra, with its flamingo reserve.
These are joined by the cliffs of Maro-Cerro Gordo, in the foothills of the Sierra de la Almijara, where you can also find the Cueva de Nerja, or the karst formations of Las Pedrizas and the Torcal de Antequera.
As for leisure and entertainment, there are a multitude of options in lively cities such as “night-time routes”, events such as the “Noche en Blanco” (White Night) and a variety of themed activities.
And finally, from the Mediterranean cuisine of the coast to the typical products and dishes of the inland villages, Andalusia’s gastronomy stands out for its variety and flavours, and can be tasted in restaurants, chiringuitos, tapas bars, bodegas and Michelin-starred chefs.
In short, all these ingredients make both Andalusia and the Costa del Sol a preferred destination for the organisation of major sporting events, such as this Solheim Cup, which has everything to become the best edition in its history.
