The Solheim Cup 2023 is getting closer

FITUR’s Sala Andalucía hosted the presentation of the most important tournament in women’s golf, which will take place from 22nd to 24th September at Finca Cortesín, in Costa del Sol.

Juan Manuel Moreno, President of the Junta de Andalucía, supported the celebration of the Solheim Cup 2023 with his presence and was photographed with the trophy.

The Solheim Cup 2023, with its magnificent Waterford crystal trophy as a witness, is not the first time it has visited FITUR. But this time it has had a special relevance, as 22nd September, the date on which the tournament will begin to be played at Finca Cortesín, is already on the horizon.

The heads of the main institutions that have made it possible for a competition such as the Solheim Cup to be held in Spain for the first time in its history did not miss the event.

Gonzaga Escauriaza, President of the Royal Spanish Golf Federation, opened the event, pointing out that “the Solheim Cup is not an event like any other, as it will leave a legacy that will go beyond the week of the tournament. A legacy that will mean wealth for many sectors in addition to golf”.

José Antonio Mena, Mayor of Benahavís; Juan Luis Villalón, Deputy Mayor of Casares; and Ángeles Muñoz, Mayoress of Marbella, highlighted the great work carried out.

“It is a source of pride for our municipality to host this event, Solheim Cup´s year has finally arrived. The organisation that has been carried out over the years has been based on hard work and we can already see the results,” said Mena.

“We have to value the meeting and dialogue of the different institutions and administrations that have agreed with other private agents to achieve an objective that will benefit the Costa del Sol as a whole. And, of course, to highlight the value of women’s sport,” said Villalón.

“What we are celebrating today has not been easy and we have to recognise the effort of Deporte & Business, the organising company, and the Junta de Andalucía, because it has been a matter of all of us, we have all rowed in the same direction. We have taken advantage of the opportunity that was presented to us and therefore I have to congratulate everyone for the achievement”, said Muñoz.

Vicente Rubio, general manager of Finca Cortesín, continued with the speeches, highlighting the club’s commitment to the event, “as we are going to be the image of Andalucía in the world. We have prepared the course thoroughly and we are committed to both women’s golf and sustainability”.

Manuel Cardeña, executive managing director of Acosol, took the baton on the lectern and explained that “Acosol’s contribution to the project will be to support sustainability and put an end to the label that golf does not care for the environment”, as well as demanding that the Spanish Government “support this event, as it cannot and should not be left out of a project of this magnitude”.

Margarita del Cid, CEO of Costa del Sol Tourism, also emphasised “the joint work of both the different institutions and the private sector to turn the Costa del Sol back into the centre of attention in the golfing world”.

“It has not been easy, it has been three terms of work, but the common thread is that everyone is committed to the project. And that is because we all know the benefits of golf”.

Arturo Bernal, Andalusian Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport, closed the event with a few words in which he defined the process of hosting the Solheim Cup as “an active wait in which there have been moments of tension, of suffering, but which has finally come to fruition”.

“Any great project is not achieved from indolence, it is achieved from the pride of being the best golf destination in Europe and one of the best in the world. This is a success for all of us and will transcend us all. It will be a before and after. Over the years we will see not only the sporting, but also the economic and cultural benefits of the event. It doesn’t end in 2023, it starts in 2023.

PING Junior Solheim Cup in La Zagaleta

The presentation of the 2023 Solheim Cup also served to put the spotlight on the PING Junior Solheim Cup, a tournament that will bring together the best U18 amateur players from Europe and the United States at the Old Course in La Zagaleta on 18 and 19 September.

“We are very proud to host the PING Junior Solheim Cup and we are excited to welcome the promising young players who in the future will be part of the elite of our sport,” said José Canales, country club managing director of La Zagaleta Golf.

“For 30 years, excellence has been the raison d’être of our club and, for this reason, we are going to use all our experience and love for golf to present the course in the best possible conditions and ensure the success of the tournament,” he concluded.
